Debunk eight common myths about linoleum flooring and discover its durability, modern design options, and eco-friendly benefits for your home.

Linoleum flooring has been around for generations, yet it continues to be misunderstood in today’s market. While some people still associate it with outdated designs or limited performance, the reality is that modern advancements have completely reshaped how this material looks and performs. From improved durability to expanded design options, linoleum has evolved into a practical and attractive choice for many homes and commercial spaces. Understanding the truth behind common misconceptions can help you make a more informed decision when selecting flooring that fits your lifestyle and long-term goals.

           1. Rethink the Idea That Linoleum Flooring Is Outdated

The belief that linoleum flooring is outdated often comes from older design limitations that no longer apply. Today’s options include a wide range of colors, textures, and finishes that align with modern interior design trends. Homeowners can now choose styles that complement everything from minimalist spaces to bold, contemporary layouts. These updates make linoleum flooring a relevant and competitive option in today’s flooring market.

Advancements in manufacturing have also significantly improved the look and performance of this material. High-definition printing techniques allow it to mimic more expensive surfaces like wood or stone without the added cost or maintenance. At the same time, improved coatings enhance scratch resistance and longevity, making it a smart long-term investment. These innovations ensure that linoleum continues to evolve alongside other flooring solutions.

           2. Differentiate Linoleum From Vinyl Flooring

A common misconception is that linoleum flooring and vinyl are essentially the same product, but they differ in both composition and environmental impact. Linoleum is made from natural materials like linseed oil, cork dust, and wood flour, while vinyl is a synthetic product derived from petroleum. This difference plays a major role in sustainability and indoor air quality. As a result, linoleum flooring is often preferred by those seeking eco-conscious options.

In addition to environmental differences, performance characteristics also vary. Linoleum tends to age gracefully, developing a natural patina over time, while vinyl may show wear more quickly in high-traffic areas. Maintenance is also straightforward with linoleum, requiring only routine cleaning to maintain its appearance. These distinctions highlight why it’s important to evaluate materials beyond surface similarities.

           3. Simplify Maintenance Expectations

Many homeowners assume linoleum flooring requires complicated upkeep, but maintenance is actually simple and manageable. Regular sweeping and occasional damp mopping are typically enough to keep the surface clean and looking its best. Because the material is naturally resistant to dirt and bacteria, it supports a healthier indoor environment with minimal effort. This makes linoleum flooring especially appealing for busy households.

Avoiding harsh chemicals and using gentle cleaners can help preserve its finish over time. Periodic resealing may be recommended depending on usage, but this is not an overly demanding process. Compared to other flooring types that require refinishing or deep cleaning, linoleum stands out for its ease of care. With consistent maintenance, it can maintain its appearance for decades.

           4. Recognize the Durability of Linoleum Flooring

Some people underestimate the durability of linoleum flooring, but its composition tells a different story. Made from resilient natural materials, it is designed to handle heavy foot traffic without losing its structural integrity. This makes it suitable for both residential and commercial environments where durability is essential. When properly installed, linoleum flooring can withstand years of daily use.

According to Fixr, 83% of homeowners prioritize durability when selecting new flooring for their homes, and linoleum aligns perfectly with that expectation. Its ability to resist wear, absorb impact, and maintain its appearance over time makes it a dependable option. Modern enhancements have further improved its resistance to scratches and fading, adding even more value. This durability ensures that linoleum remains a practical choice for long-term use.

           5. Expand Your View of Design Possibilities

Another misconception is that linoleum flooring is limited in design, but current options prove otherwise. Modern manufacturing techniques allow for a wide variety of patterns, colors, and textures that suit nearly any design preference. Whether you prefer bold statement floors or subtle, neutral tones, there is a style available to match your vision. Linoleum flooring now competes directly with more expensive materials in terms of aesthetics.

Customization also plays a key role in its versatility. The material can be cut and shaped into unique layouts, allowing for creative flooring designs that enhance a space. Designers often use linoleum to create visually striking patterns or to complement other interior elements. This flexibility makes it a valuable option for both residential and commercial projects.

           6. Embrace The Environmental Benefits

Some believe linoleum flooring is not environmentally friendly, but this couldn’t be further from the truth. Its natural composition makes it one of the most sustainable flooring options available today. Unlike synthetic alternatives, it is biodegradable and produced using renewable resources. This gives linoleum flooring a significantly smaller environmental footprint.

The manufacturing process has also improved to support eco-friendly practices. Many producers focus on reducing waste, conserving energy, and minimizing emissions throughout production. These efforts contribute to a more sustainable product lifecycle from creation to disposal. For homeowners who value environmentally responsible choices, linoleum stands out as a strong option.

           7. Understand Long-Term Value and Cost

While linoleum flooring may have a slightly higher upfront cost compared to some alternatives, its long-term value often outweighs the initial investment. Its durability reduces the need for frequent replacement, saving money over time. Additionally, its low maintenance requirements help minimize ongoing costs associated with cleaning and repairs. This combination makes linoleum flooring a cost-effective solution in the long run.

When evaluating flooring options, it’s important to consider total lifecycle costs rather than just the purchase price. Linoleum’s ability to maintain its appearance and performance for decades adds to its overall value. Its eco-friendly properties may also contribute to long-term savings by supporting energy efficiency and healthier indoor air quality. These factors make it a well-rounded investment for many property owners.

           8. Apply Linoleum Flooring in Versatile Spaces

           Linoleum flooring

is often associated with kitchens or older buildings, but its applications are far more versatile. It performs well in high-traffic areas such as hallways, offices, and retail environments due to its resilience. Modern improvements have also enhanced its resistance to moisture, expanding its usability in more areas of the home. This makes linoleum flooring a flexible choice for various settings.

Its natural antibacterial properties further increase its suitability for spaces where cleanliness is a priority. Schools, healthcare facilities, and commercial spaces frequently rely on linoleum for this reason. In residential settings, it offers a comfortable and durable surface that adapts to everyday life. These qualities highlight its ability to meet a wide range of needs.

Linoleum flooring continues to prove that many long-held assumptions are simply outdated. With advancements in design, durability, and sustainability, it offers a well-balanced solution for modern homes and businesses. By separating fact from fiction, it becomes clear that this material delivers both performance and visual appeal in ways that rival other flooring options. Whether you’re renovating a single room or planning a larger project, understanding these benefits can help guide your decision.

A vinyl floor installer delivers durable, stylish, and cost-effective flooring solutions that resist wear while enhancing any home or commercial space.

Vinyl flooring has emerged as one of the most versatile and reliable flooring options for both residential and commercial spaces, combining durability, style, and affordability in a single solution. Engineered with multiple layers of resilient materials, vinyl delivers exceptional toughness, resisting dents, scratches, and daily wear while maintaining its aesthetic appeal. Beyond durability, vinyl flooring offers virtually limitless design possibilities, allowing homeowners and designers to mimic the look of natural wood, stone, or tile without the associated maintenance challenges. Its adaptability to contemporary and classic styles ensures that it can seamlessly complement any interior design vision. Additionally, vinyl provides a cost-effective flooring option, offering long-term value by minimizing replacement and maintenance expenses while still delivering high-quality performance. Whether you’re renovating a home, outfitting a commercial space, or designing a new construction, vinyl flooring provides an ideal balance of strength, beauty, and affordability.

           1. Durability and Toughness

A vinyl flooring installer is engineered with multiple layers combining to deliver incredible durability and toughness. The base layer is typically made of fiberglass, providing a stable foundation that prevents warping and bending. Above this, multiple layers of PVC provide added stability, making it suitable for areas with high traffic. The design layer, often a high-resolution printed film, allows for intricate designs that retain the appearance of natural materials such as wood or stone. The layered structure is key to vinyl flooring's ability to handle stress and heavy use without compromising its structural integrity.

The use of vinyl resins and plasticizers in these layers further enhances flexibility and resilience. This manufacturing process not only strengthens the flooring but also ensures it can endure substantial pressure and footfall. Each layer serves a distinct function, from absorption to protection, creating an overall flooring solution that is hard-wearing and reliable. Importantly, these materials contribute to a stable structural base that supports the floor against impacts without buckling. The inherent qualities of these components make vinyl flooring installers an excellent choice for demanding environments.

The resilience of these materials allows for an extended product life, reducing the necessity for frequent replacements. Property owners benefit from a product that holds up over time, minimizing both disruption and cost. As a result, vinyl flooring’s consistent performance across commercial and residential spaces solidifies its reputation. According to Fixr, vinyl flooring’s popularity has made it one of the fastest-growing segments in the flooring industry, with a projected market growth rate of 8.75% by 2029. This increasing demand showcases its established place in environments requiring durable solutions.

Vinyl flooring is designed to be resistant to dents, scratches, and other common signs of wear that come with high traffic. The inherent flexibility of the material makes it better at absorbing shocks than harder surfaces such as ceramic tiles. This affords commercial establishments the relief of knowing their flooring can endure the challenges of daily, consistent foot traffic. Additionally, vinyl flooring's ability to resist scratches from furniture and wheeled objects maintains aesthetic appearance. The design contributes significantly to the floor’s longevity, providing lasting satisfaction and lower repairs.

           2. Design Flexibility

One of the standout features of using vinyl flooring installers is its design versatility, available in an extensive range of colors, patterns, and textures. This variety enables designers to achieve virtually any aesthetic vision, from classic hardwood styles to modern and artistic layouts. Vinyl does an excellent job of mimicking the appearance of natural materials like wood or stone, without the associated maintenance issues. This ability to cater to personalized style preferences makes vinyl a popular choice among homeowners and interior designers alike. As such, the flooring complements different décor styles, making it adaptable to various design needs.

Furthermore, advancements in printing technology have allowed for incredibly realistic textures that replicate these materials closely. This means people can enjoy the look of high-end flooring without the costs or environmental footprints. The variety available ensures that no matter the design concept, there’s a vinyl option that fits the bill. With its flexible design choices, vinyl caters to those aiming to personalize their spaces creatively and efficiently. As a result, it holds significant appeal to diverse markets with varying aesthetic demands.

From subtle matte finishes to glossy, decorative surfaces, the range of options is virtually limitless. This enables property owners to select flooring that best matches their stylistic aspirations and practical requirements. Moreover, with customizable color palettes and unlimited pattern combinations, vinyl flooring ensures unique and bespoke floor designs. The personalization extends beyond appearances, allowing floors that match the specific needs of the inhabitants. Ultimately, this versatility grants vinyl flooring a broader market appeal, ensuring it meets both functional and aesthetic standards. Vinyl flooring stays current with contemporary design trends, ensuring it remains a timeless addition to interior spaces. As design trends evolve, so too do the design offerings available with vinyl flooring installers, keeping it in line with modern tastes. From monochromatic themes and bold geometric patterns to minimalist and Scandinavian-inspired looks, vinyl flooring can accommodate a broad range of modern styles. This alignment with trending styles aids in enhancing the longevity of vinyl’s popularity in the flooring market. By keeping pace with aesthetic demands, vinyl flooring promises a contemporary yet enduring solution for a variety of spaces.

           3. Cost-Effectiveness

When evaluating flooring options for high-traffic areas, the initial cost is a critical consideration, and vinyl flooring installers stand out due to its cost-effectiveness. Compared to hardwood, ceramic, or stone, vinyl generally requires a lower initial investment, making it attractive to budget-conscious buyers. This affordability, combined with its durability, enhances its appeal as a value-for-money option offering immediate and long-term benefits. The comparatively low cost does not sacrifice quality, ensuring buyers get the best of both price and performance. For both large-scale commercial projects and personal renovations, this balance provides an enticing option for flooring installations.

The affordability of vinyl does not overshadow its ability to deliver consistent and reliable performance over its lifespan. Homeowners and businesses interested in durable solutions at reasonable prices gravitate towards vinyl for its combination of cost and resilience. Moreover, affordable installation costs add to its appeal, making it viable for various projects regardless of scale. These aspects collectively contribute to the growing demand for vinyl flooring choices. As more individuals and businesses recognize vinyl's merits, its market presence continues to thrive.

Initial savings on materials and installation make vinyl suitable for spaces that may have budget constraints but prioritize quality. The relatively low upfront costs enable spaces to undergo enhancements without extensive financial strain. This allows owners to allocate resources towards other improvement aspects while still obtaining a superior flooring product. As vinyl becomes more entrenched in the market, it continues to prove that quality need not be expensive. Its capacity to fulfill budgetary constraints without performance compromise substantiates its status as an economic flooring choice.

Hardwood flooring has long been celebrated as one of the most enduring and versatile choices for homeowners. Its charm lies not only in its timeless aesthetic appeal but also in its ability to enhance the value, functionality, and overall ambiance of a home. While trends in interior design come and go, hardwood floors have remained a staple for decades, appealing to both practical and style-conscious homeowners. Beyond mere beauty, this material represents a long-term investment, often recouping a significant portion of the cost when it comes time to sell.

Homeowners considering upgrades often consult with hardwood flooring companies to understand the benefits of this classic material. From durability to resale value, hardwood floors offer advantages that few alternatives can match. With a wide variety of species, grains, and finishes available, hardwood flooring integrates seamlessly into a variety of home styles, from traditional to contemporary. In addition, proper installation and maintenance ensure that these floors can last for generations, making them a smart and enduring investment.

           What Makes Hardwood Flooring Durable?

One of the primary reasons homeowners choose hardwood flooring is its unmatched durability. Unlike softer materials, hardwood withstands daily wear and tear, including foot traffic, furniture movement, and accidental drops. The resilience of hardwood largely depends on the species, finishing, and treatments applied during manufacturing. Oak, maple, and hickory are known for their hardness and longevity, making them popular choices among homeowners.

Hardwood flooring companies emphasize that proper installation is essential to maximize durability. This includes ensuring a level subfloor, appropriate acclimation of the wood before installation, and the use of high-quality adhesives or fasteners. Once installed, routine maintenance, such as cleaning spills promptly and using protective pads under furniture, helps prevent scratches and dents. Some hardwood species can even be refinished multiple times over their lifespan, allowing homeowners to restore the surface to a like-new condition without replacing the floor entirely.

The combination of natural strength, expert craftsmanship, and regular maintenance explains why hardwood remains a go-to choice for homeowners seeking floors that endure for decades. Hardwood flooring companies often note that investing in high-quality materials upfront can save significant time and money in long-term repairs or replacements.

How Does Hardwood Add Value to Your Home?

Beyond its aesthetic appeal, hardwood flooring is widely recognized for its ability to boost a home’s market value. According to Fixr, installing hardwood floors can increase a property’s value by three to five percent, an impressive return on investment that often exceeds the initial installation cost. Real estate professionals frequently cite hardwood as a key selling point, as buyers tend to perceive homes with hardwood floors as more elegant and well-maintained. In competitive housing markets, homes with well-kept hardwood floors can often sell faster and attract more attention than comparable properties with alternative flooring materials. This combination of beauty, durability, and financial benefit makes hardwood a standout choice for both buyers and sellers.

Hardwood flooring companies often collaborate with homeowners and real estate agents to recommend the best species and finishes that appeal to buyers. Lighter tones like maple or ash can make spaces feel larger and more modern, while classic darker woods like walnut provide a sense of sophistication. Mixed-width planks or unique finishes can also create a custom look that enhances a home’s character and makes it more memorable to potential buyers. By consulting with experts, homeowners can select flooring that aligns with market preferences and enhances curb appeal, ultimately supporting a higher resale price and a stronger overall investment.

Moreover, the timeless appeal of hardwood ensures that the value it adds is not fleeting. Unlike some trendy materials that may fall out of fashion, hardwood’s classic look remains desirable, making it a secure investment for both current enjoyment and future returns. Even decades after installation, quality hardwood floors continue to impress prospective buyers and complement evolving interior styles, reinforcing their reputation as one of the most reliable and lasting upgrades a homeowner can make.

What Are the Aesthetic Benefits of Hardwood Flooring?

The aesthetic advantages of hardwood flooring extend far beyond its resale value. Hardwood offers an unparalleled warmth and elegance that few materials can replicate. Available in a broad spectrum of grains, colors, and finishes, it can complement nearly any interior design style, from rustic farmhouse to sleek modern.

Hardwood flooring companies often guide homeowners in selecting the perfect style to enhance their space. Wide plank boards, distressed finishes, and hand-scraped textures offer character and uniqueness, while smooth, uniform planks provide a contemporary look. Additionally, the natural variations in grain patterns create a sense of depth and richness that artificial alternatives struggle to achieve.

Lighting also interacts beautifully with hardwood, reflecting and refracting across polished surfaces to create an inviting ambiance. Even subtle changes in stain or wood type can dramatically alter the room’s feel, demonstrating the versatility and transformative potential of hardwood flooring.

By choosing the right species and finish with the guidance of experienced hardwood flooring companies, homeowners can achieve a look that elevates both their daily living experience and the home’s overall aesthetic appeal.

How Do I Choose the Right Hardwood Flooring Company?

Selecting a reliable and experienced hardwood flooring company is critical to ensuring a successful installation. The right company provides not only high-quality materials but also professional expertise and customer support throughout the process. Homeowners should look for companies with strong reputations, verified references, and a track record of completing projects on time and within budget.

Hardwood flooring companies often differ in their offerings, ranging from standard installation to custom designs and specialized finishes. Comparing pricing and services is essential, but homeowners should also consider factors like warranties, maintenance guidance, and post-installation support. Transparency in communication and responsiveness to questions are indicators of a company that values client satisfaction.

Additionally, many companies provide consultations to evaluate the home’s subfloor, lighting, and space layout before recommending the best hardwood options. By investing time in selecting the right professional, homeowners ensure that their hardwood flooring will be installed properly, maintained effectively, and enjoyed for years to come.

How Can I Maintain Hardwood Flooring for Longevity?

Even the most durable hardwood requires regular maintenance to preserve its beauty and longevity. Hardwood flooring companies recommend routine sweeping or vacuuming to remove dust and debris that can scratch surfaces. Using a damp—not wet—mop helps clean without introducing excess moisture, which can warp wood over time.

Protective measures, such as placing rugs in high-traffic areas, using furniture pads, and avoiding harsh cleaning chemicals, can prevent damage. Periodic refinishing or sanding may be necessary for older floors to restore luster and remove surface imperfections. Some hardwood species can undergo multiple refinishing cycles, giving homeowners the opportunity to refresh the flooring without replacement.

Hardwood flooring companies also stress the importance of controlling indoor humidity levels. Wood naturally expands and contracts with changes in moisture, and maintaining a consistent environment reduces the risk of warping, gapping, or cupping. By following these guidelines, homeowners can enjoy hardwood floors that remain beautiful and functional for decades, protecting their investment and maximizing long-term value.

Hardwood flooring is far more than a design choice; it is a lasting investment that enhances the financial, aesthetic, and practical value of any home. With unmatched durability, timeless beauty, and the potential to increase property value by three to five percent, hardwood represents a smart choice for both current enjoyment and future resale.

Updating your floors can completely transform a home, but achieving a beautiful, long-lasting result requires skill, planning, and expertise. Many homeowners attempt to tackle flooring projects on their own or hire general contractors, only to face challenges like uneven tiles, water damage, or long delays. Hiring a tile flooring contractor ensures that your floors are installed correctly, efficiently, and in a way that maximizes both beauty and durability.

Professional contractors understand the nuances of different materials, from ceramic and porcelain to luxury vinyl tile. According to Contract Flooring Journal, luxury vinyl tile is 100% waterproof, making it an ideal option for areas prone to moisture, such as kitchens, bathrooms, and basements. A tile flooring contractor can help you choose materials that are both practical and aesthetically pleasing while addressing the specific needs of your space.

This article explores the benefits of working with a tile flooring contractor. From expertise and efficiency to design flexibility, safety, and property value, these advantages show why hiring a professional can make your flooring project smoother, less stressful, and more successful. Beyond technical skills, contractors also bring a level of insight and creativity that can elevate your home’s entire atmosphere.

           Expertise and Skill

One of the biggest advantages of hiring a tile flooring contractor is their extensive knowledge and skill. They have years of experience working with various materials, including ceramic, porcelain, glass, natural stone, and luxury vinyl tile. Their understanding of how these materials perform under different conditions ensures that your floor will last longer and maintain its appearance over time.

Beyond material selection, tile flooring contractors excel at installation techniques that homeowners may not know. They can handle complex layouts, mosaic designs, or uneven subfloors with precision, preventing issues like misaligned tiles or uneven grout. Their problem-solving abilities and attention to detail ensure that the project runs smoothly and delivers a finish that is both functional and visually appealing.

Moreover, contractors can advise on material care and maintenance, sharing tips for cleaning and protecting your floors to ensure long-term durability. For instance, understanding which sealants to use on porous tiles or how to avoid moisture damage in high-humidity rooms is knowledge that comes from years of hands-on experience. This expertise saves homeowners from costly mistakes and enhances the life of their investment.

           Efficiency and Time Management

Working with a professional contractor also saves significant time. Tile flooring projects involve multiple steps, including preparing the subfloor, cutting tiles to fit, installing grout, and finishing edges. A tile flooring contractor coordinates all these steps efficiently, preventing delays and reducing stress for homeowners.

Contractors also have access to the right tools and equipment to complete tasks more quickly and accurately. For example, they use precision cutters, leveling systems, and high-grade adhesives that ensure tiles are perfectly aligned and secure. This efficiency means you can enjoy your newly installed floor sooner without sacrificing quality.

Efficiency extends to project planning as well. Tile flooring contractors know how to schedule tasks in a way that minimizes disruption to your home, especially in areas like kitchens and bathrooms, which are used daily. Their experience allows them to anticipate potential issues, such as material shortages or unexpected subfloor irregularities, and address them without halting progress. By handling logistics and troubleshooting, contractors save homeowners both time and unnecessary frustration.

           Quality and Durability

Another key benefit of hiring a tile flooring contractor is the assurance of quality and durability. Professionals use precise installation techniques to create a strong, long-lasting floor. Properly installed tiles resist cracking, shifting, and water damage, maintaining their integrity over time. A tile flooring contractor knows how to prepare subfloors to handle heavy foot traffic and furniture, preventing uneven settling or cracking. They also ensure proper grout application and sealing, which protects against water infiltration, stains, and mildew. Using high-quality tools and materials, including luxury vinyl tile for moisture-prone areas, guarantees a finished floor that can withstand everyday wear and tear while remaining attractive for years.

Durability isn’t just about physical strength; it’s also about reducing long-term maintenance. With the right installation, homeowners spend less time worrying about repairs or replacement. This combination of strength, resistance to damage, and ease of maintenance underscores why professional installation is a worthwhile investment.

           Design Flexibility and Customization

Tile flooring contractors provide a wealth of design options, allowing homeowners to achieve customized looks that reflect their personal style. They can suggest patterns, textures, and layouts that optimize both the aesthetics and functionality of your space. Whether you want a classic subway tile look in your bathroom, a herringbone pattern in your kitchen, or a large-format tile in your living room, contractors have the experience to bring those designs to life. They can also integrate different materials in creative ways, such as combining stone with luxury vinyl tiles to achieve a specific effect. Their design insights help ensure that your floor complements your home’s overall décor while remaining practical for daily use.

Additionally, contractors consider factors like room size, lighting, and traffic flow to provide layouts that maximize both beauty and usability. Their advice can prevent design mistakes, such as choosing overly dark tiles in small spaces or arranging tiles in patterns that appear chaotic rather than harmonious. With a tile flooring contractor, your floors are not just functional—they’re a key part of your home’s style.

           Safety and Compliance

A professional tile flooring contractor ensures that installation meets all safety and building standards. Proper techniques prevent hazards such as loose tiles, tripping risks, or moisture damage that could affect underlying structures. Contractors are familiar with local codes and regulations, ensuring the project is compliant and avoids potential fines or complications.

They also prioritize the use of safe adhesives and grouts, which contribute to a healthier indoor environment. Proper installation safeguards both the longevity of your floor and the safety of everyone in your home. Additionally, professionals are trained to handle challenging areas, such as wet rooms, staircases, or outdoor patios, reducing the risk of slips or structural issues. By addressing safety and compliance from the start, a tile flooring contractor ensures that your project not only looks great but is secure and reliable for years to come. This focus on safety is especially valuable for families with children or pets, where a poorly installed floor could pose hazards.

           Property Value and Investment

Finally, working with a tile flooring contractor can increase your home’s value. Professionally installed floors enhance the overall appearance of your home, making it more attractive to buyers and visitors. High-quality flooring indicates that the property has been well-maintained, which can influence resale value.

Durable, expertly installed tiles also reduce the need for repairs and maintenance, saving homeowners money in the long term. The combination of visual appeal, functionality, and durability makes flooring installed by a professional a worthwhile investment for both enjoyment and property value. Furthermore, a well-chosen tile style can modernize a home’s appearance, creating a fresh, inviting environment that appeals to a wide range of potential buyers. In addition, hiring a reputable tile flooring contractor often comes with warranties and guarantees, which further enhance property value. Prospective buyers appreciate knowing that the floors were professionally installed and maintained according to industry standards, reinforcing confidence in the overall quality of the home.

Hire the right hardwood flooring company to ensure expert installation, lasting beauty, and lasting value. Trust experienced contractors for flawless results.

Investing in hardwood flooring is more than a home improvement project—it’s a way to enhance the beauty, warmth, and long-term value of your living space. Hardwood floors offer durability, timeless appeal, and a unique aesthetic that can elevate any room. However, achieving the perfect installation requires hiring a reputable hardwood flooring company with the right experience, craftsmanship, and professionalism. From defining the scope of your project to reviewing proposals and monitoring progress, understanding the full process is essential to avoid costly mistakes and ensure a seamless experience. This guide outlines the steps you need to confidently select a contractor who can deliver both exceptional results and long-term satisfaction.

Understanding the Full Scope of Your Flooring Project

The first step in hiring a hardwood flooring company is fully understanding the scope of your project. Begin by identifying the areas in your home that require new flooring or replacement, and take accurate measurements. Consider structural issues, uneven subfloors, or prior water damage that may impact the installation process. Being clear about the project’s size and potential challenges allows you to communicate effectively with contractors, receive accurate estimates, and prevent surprises down the line.

Selecting the right type of hardwood is another critical decision. Options like oak, maple, cherry, and walnut each offer distinct colors, grain patterns, and durability levels. Think about foot traffic, sunlight exposure, and moisture-prone areas when making your selection. For example, a sunny living room may benefit from a lighter oak that resists fading, while a kitchen may require a species with high durability and moisture tolerance. Balancing aesthetic preferences with practical considerations ensures your flooring remains both beautiful and functional for years to come.

Budgeting and scheduling are equally important. Research material and labor costs in your area to set realistic expectations. According to Bob Villa, homeowners who install hardwood flooring can expect to recoup 118% of the project’s cost, demonstrating the financial value of a well-executed flooring investment. Creating a clear timeline alongside your budget helps prevent disruptions and provides a framework for working with your selected hardwood flooring company.

           Researching and Vetting Reliable Contractors

Finding a reliable hardwood flooring company begins with thorough research and vetting. Start by asking for recommendations from friends, family, or colleagues who have completed similar projects. Personal referrals often reveal insights into a company’s workmanship, reliability, and communication style—details that are sometimes missing in online reviews.

Speaking of online reviews, platforms such as Google, Yelp, and Angie's List are invaluable tools for evaluating potential contractors. Look for consistent praise regarding craftsmanship, professionalism, and responsiveness. Conversely, recurring complaints can serve as red flags. Pay attention not only to what previous clients say but also to how the company responds to feedback, as this reflects its commitment to customer satisfaction.

Certifications and industry accreditations are another indicator of professionalism. Organizations like the National Wood Flooring Association (NWFA) provide certifications that demonstrate a company’s adherence to best practices, ongoing training, and knowledge of current trends. Additionally, reviewing a company’s portfolio of past projects allows you to assess the quality of their workmanship and see whether their style aligns with your vision. By confirming experience, credentials, and references, you reduce risk and ensure you’re hiring a hardwood flooring company capable of meeting your project’s specific requirements.

Reviewing Detailed Proposals and Pricing Options

Once you’ve shortlisted potential companies, request detailed proposals or estimates. A well-prepared Request for Proposal (RFP) should outline the project scope, preferred materials, timelines, and any special considerations. Providing this level of detail helps contractors submit accurate and competitive bids.

Carefully review itemized estimates. Total project costs can vary significantly depending on materials, labor, and additional fees such as removal of existing flooring or subfloor preparation. Some companies quote fixed prices, while others may use time-and-materials models, each with its own advantages. Understanding these pricing structures allows you to make informed comparisons and select the best value for your budget.

Payment terms should also be clearly discussed before finalizing any contract. Many hardwood flooring companies require a deposit upfront, progress payments at milestones, and a final balance upon completion. Knowing the expected schedule ensures that both you and the contractor have clear financial expectations, minimizes disputes, and fosters trust throughout the project. By prioritizing transparency in proposals, pricing, and payment, you set the stage for a positive and collaborative working relationship.

           Conducting Interviews and On-Site Evaluations

Interviews and site visits are essential steps in vetting a hardwood flooring company. Prepare questions that cover experience, past projects, problem-solving strategies, and handling of special requirements. The contractor’s responses will give insight into their professionalism, communication skills, and ability to handle challenges.

Scheduling an on-site evaluation allows contractors to assess the unique conditions of your home. They can identify obstacles such as uneven subfloors, moisture concerns, or room layouts that could affect installation. These visits also give you a chance to observe workmanship and techniques firsthand, either on current job sites or during portfolio reviews.

Additionally, contacting previous clients provides a realistic perspective on the company’s reliability, adherence to timelines, and overall satisfaction with results. Comprehensive research, including interviews, site visits, and client feedback, ensures you select a hardwood flooring company that consistently delivers quality work and excellent service.

Finalizing Contracts and Setting Clear Milestones

After selecting your preferred hardwood flooring company, the next step is finalizing the contract. Carefully review all terms, including scope of work, timelines, costs, and payment schedules. Warranties for materials and workmanship should be clearly outlined to protect your investment. A solid contract ensures both parties have a mutual understanding and legal protection.

Negotiation is an important component of this process. Discuss deadlines, project milestones, material choices, and any special considerations. Reaching an agreement on these points helps avoid conflicts and fosters cooperation throughout the project. Setting clear expectations and establishing milestones breaks the project into manageable phases, making it easier to monitor progress and hold all parties accountable. Collaborating with your contractor on a structured project plan increases efficiency and ensures a smoother installation process.

Monitoring Progress to Ensure Quality and Safety

Even after signing the contract, active involvement is key to a successful outcome. Maintain regular communication with your hardwood flooring company to track progress, address issues, and adjust plans if necessary. Timely feedback helps prevent delays, cost overruns, and misunderstandings.

Safety and quality standards should remain a top priority. Confirm that the contractor follows safety protocols, uses proper equipment, and protects both workers and your home. Observing installation techniques, craftsmanship, and attention to detail helps ensure the finished flooring meets your expectations. Engaging throughout the project fosters trust, accountability, and a collaborative relationship. Ultimately, monitoring progress and addressing issues proactively guarantees that the investment in your hardwood floors delivers long-lasting beauty and value.

5 Reasons to Choose Luxury Vinyl Flooring

Discover how luxury vinyl flooring offers style, durability, and easy maintenance that's perfect for modern homes and busy lifestyles.

From hardwood and tile to laminate and carpet, here are countless flooring options to consider. Among these, one option has steadily gained popularity for its versatility, durability, and stylish appearance: luxury vinyl flooring. This type of flooring combines the elegance of traditional materials like hardwood or stone with the practical benefits of vinyl, making it an ideal choice for modern homeowners. Whether you’re renovating your kitchen, updating your living room, or designing a new space from scratch, luxury vinyl offers an impressive combination of beauty and functionality.

Beyond aesthetics, homeowners are increasingly drawn to flooring solutions that can withstand the demands of daily life. Pets, children, spills, and heavy foot traffic all require a floor that is not only visually appealing but also resilient and easy to maintain. Luxury vinyl addresses these needs by offering a durable surface that resists scratches, stains, and moisture, all while providing the warmth and texture of natural materials. Explore the top five reasons why choosing luxury vinyl may be the best investment for your home.

           1. Durability That Lasts

One of the most compelling reasons to choose luxury vinyl is its remarkable durability. Unlike traditional hardwood, which can dent or scratch over time, luxury vinyl is designed to withstand high-traffic areas without losing its charm. Its top layer protects against wear and tear, making it an excellent option for homes with children, pets, or frequent visitors. This resilience ensures that your floors will continue to look beautiful for years to come, minimizing the need for costly repairs or replacements.

Another factor contributing to the durability of luxury vinyl flooring is its moisture resistance. Unlike wood, which can warp or swell when exposed to water, luxury vinyl can handle spills, humidity, and even occasional flooding with minimal damage. This makes it a particularly practical choice for kitchens, bathrooms, and basements, where moisture can often be a concern. Homeowners can enjoy peace of mind knowing their floors will maintain their integrity under a variety of conditions.

Additionally, luxury vinyl is engineered to resist scratches and stains, making maintenance simple and stress-free. Regular sweeping and occasional mopping are usually sufficient to keep it looking new, and its stain-resistant surface ensures that accidental spills don’t become permanent problems.

           2. Stunning Aesthetic Options

Luxury vinyl is available in a wide variety of styles, colors, and textures, allowing homeowners to achieve nearly any look they desire. Whether you prefer the rustic charm of oak, the sleek elegance of marble, or the classic appeal of stone, luxury vinyl flooring can replicate these surfaces with remarkable realism. Modern printing technology and embossed textures give vinyl floors a depth and authenticity that rivals natural materials, allowing you to create a high-end aesthetic at a fraction of the cost.

This flexibility in design also means that luxury vinyl can seamlessly complement any interior style. From contemporary minimalist homes to traditional or farmhouse-inspired spaces, there is a vinyl option to suit every taste. Many homeowners choose to mix and match patterns or use luxury vinyl to create focal points in a room, such as accent flooring in entryways or kitchens, demonstrating the material’s versatility.

Beyond appearance, the design benefits of luxury vinyl extend to comfort and acoustics. Unlike harder surfaces such as tile or stone, vinyl provides a softer, warmer feel underfoot, making it more comfortable for long periods of standing. Its slightly cushioned core also helps reduce noise, which is especially advantageous in multi-level homes or apartments.

           3. Ease of Installation

Another reason homeowners gravitate toward luxury vinyl is its ease of installation. Unlike traditional hardwood, which requires professional skills and significant time, many luxury vinyl products come in click-and-lock or peel-and-stick formats that simplify the installation process. Homeowners can often complete smaller projects on their own, saving both time and money. Even professional installation is generally quicker than other flooring types, minimizing disruption to your daily life.

The versatility of installation extends to a variety of subfloors as well. Luxury vinyl flooring can be installed over concrete, wood, and even some existing flooring surfaces, reducing the need for expensive or labor-intensive preparation. This adaptability makes it an ideal solution for renovation projects, as well as new construction, allowing homeowners to upgrade their space without major demolition or upheaval.

Ease of installation also contributes to reduced long-term costs. Since the material is forgiving and often easier to replace if damaged, homeowners can maintain or update their floors without the expense associated with more delicate surfaces.

           4. Water-Resistant Performance

Water resistance is one of the standout advantages of luxury vinyl, setting it apart from traditional wood or laminate options. Modern vinyl flooring is designed to repel water and moisture, making it suitable for kitchens, bathrooms, and laundry areas. This feature not only protects your flooring but also contributes to the overall longevity of your home’s interior. Homeowners no longer need to worry about minor spills causing permanent damage or warping their floors.

According to Better Homes & Gardens, 22% of homeowners choose vinyl and other resilient flooring for their kitchen, highlighting the material’s popularity in areas prone to moisture. Kitchens are high-traffic areas that face frequent spills, humidity, and even occasional leaks. The water-resistant nature of luxury vinyl flooring ensures that these common occurrences don’t compromise the integrity or appearance of the floor, making it a practical and popular choice.

Beyond everyday spills, luxury vinyl is also resistant to mold and mildew growth, thanks to its waterproof construction. This adds an important health and safety component, especially in homes with children or pets.

           5. Cost-Effective Elegance

While luxury vinyl offers the appearance of hardwood, stone, or tile, it does so at a fraction of the cost. This affordability allows homeowners to achieve a high-end look without straining their budget. Additionally, the long-lasting nature of the material means fewer replacements or repairs over time, adding to its overall cost-effectiveness. Luxury vinyl provides both immediate aesthetic appeal and long-term value.

Another cost-saving aspect comes from its minimal maintenance requirements. Unlike hardwood or tile, which may require refinishing, sealing, or specialized cleaning products, luxury vinyl can be maintained with simple, routine care. This reduces not only maintenance costs but also the time and effort spent keeping floors in pristine condition, making it an appealing choice for busy households.

Luxury vinyl contributes to energy efficiency in the home. Some types offer insulating properties, which can help regulate indoor temperatures and reduce heating costs. Combined with its stylish appearance, durability, and affordability, this flooring option offers a smart solution for homeowners seeking elegance without compromising practicality.

Choosing the right flooring is a critical decision in shaping the overall look, feel, and function of your home. Luxury vinyl flooring offers an exceptional blend of durability, style, and affordability, making it a versatile solution for nearly any space. Its ability to replicate high-end materials while resisting everyday wear, moisture, and stains ensures that your floors will remain beautiful and practical for years to come.

Whether you’re renovating a single room or outfitting an entire home, luxury vinyl stands out as a reliable and attractive choice. Its ease of installation, water-resistant performance, and cost-effective elegance make it a flooring solution that meets the demands of modern life without compromising on style.

Choosing the right flooring is one of the most significant decisions you'll make when designing or renovating your home. Two popular options, laminate flooring and luxury vinyl plank (LVP) flooring, have gained traction for their affordability, durability, and style. But which one is right for you? Let’s dive into the key differences and advantages of each to help you make an informed decision.

Laminate flooring is made primarily from high-density fiberboard (HDF) with a photographic layer on top that mimics wood, stone, or tile. It’s finished with a clear protective layer to resist wear and tear.

LVP is made from multiple layers of PVC vinyl. The top layer is a high-definition printed image of wood or stone, topped with a durable wear layer. Some LVPs include a rigid core made of stone-plastic composite (SPC) or wood-plastic composite (WPC) for added stability.

Laminate is highly resistant to scratches and dents, making it an excellent choice for high-traffic areas. However, it is less resistant to water, and prolonged exposure to moisture can cause warping or swelling.

LVP is waterproof, making it a better choice for areas prone to moisture, such as bathrooms, kitchens, and basements. It’s also resilient against scratches and dents, though high-quality laminate might outperform LVP in scratch resistance.

It also tends to produce more noise when walked on, which can be mitigated with quality underlayment.

Flooring transitions are essential components that seamlessly connect different types of flooring in a home or commercial space. They ensure not only a smooth aesthetic flow but also practical benefits like safety and durability. Choosing the right type of transition depends on the materials, height differences, and the location where the transition will be applied. Here’s a guide to the most common types of flooring transitions and when to use them.

Key Considerations When Choosing Flooring Transitions:

            Material Compatibility:

Ensure the transition strip matches or complements both flooring types.

            Traffic Levels:

In a previous blog post, different types of subfloors were discussed and their importance, which is to provide support and structural stability to the flooring installed over it. Before a new floor can be installed, the subfloor needs to pass a couple of tests and be prepared for the new flooring.

One of the first checks is a moisture reading. On a wood subfloor, an acceptable moisture reading is typically between 6% and 9%. If the moisture reading is above 9% (and you do not live in an area with high humidity), it is an indication that there is likely an underlying issue, such as a leak somewhere or issues with the crawl space. If the subfloor feels soft or squishy, it is another indication of a past or current issue that would require it to be replaced. The range for moisture readings for concrete varies greatly and is usually specified in the installation guidelines or specification sheet on the flooring being installed. The moisture readings for a concrete subfloor varies significantly as most floors require a moisture barrier to be applied or installed prior to the new flooring to maintain its warranty. If a moisture barrier is not installed or applied over a concrete subfloor, the new flooring will be prone to cupping, warping, mold, and other issues.

The levelness of the subfloor is the next thing that will be assessed, as it needs to be completely level. If the subfloor is not completely level in all areas, then the new floor will be prone to cupping, squeaking, more easily broken locks (if it is a locking system), or lippage (specifically applies to tile when lips are formed instead of being completely flat). Some leveling issues are more noticeable than others, some can be easily noticed by walking on the subfloor and feeling it under shoes, it can be visible, or it can be found using a beam level too. There are multiple solutions to leveling issues, depending on the severity: such as grinding the concrete, installing additional screws on the wood subfloor, or applying self-leveling. Luckily, A1 can assess for any issues with leveling and fix or repair most issues.

While assessing the subfloor for moisture and levelness, concrete subfloors will be assessed for cracks and wood subfloors will be assessed for squeaking. If there are any cracks or chips in the concrete, they would need to be repaired with patch, self-leveling, or a concrete mix depending on the severity and location. If the wood subfloor is squeaky, this can be fixed by reinforcing it by adding more screws to better secure it to the wood below it.

After ripping up any previous flooring and before installing any new flooring, all of these possible issues need to be checked and resolved by professionals, such as A1 flooring.

What are the different types of LVP Flooring?

Luxury Vinyl Plank (LVP) flooring is popular due to its durability, water resistance, and the realistic look of wood or stone it can provide. Here are some common types of LVP flooring:

           1. Rigid Core LVP

SPC (Stone Plastic Composite): Contains limestone powder, making it dense, rigid, and highly durable. This type is good for high-traffic areas and is more impact-resistant.

WPC (Wood Plastic Composite): Features a wood-polymer core, making it softer underfoot than SPC and slightly warmer, ideal for residential settings with moderate traffic.

           2. Flexible (Glue-Down) LVP

This is a more flexible plank that requires glue for installation. It’s generally thinner, which can make it more affordable, and works well in commercial spaces or large areas where expansion might be a concern.

           3. Click-Lock or Floating LVP

Click-lock LVP has interlocking edges, allowing it to be installed as a floating floor (without glue or nails). It’s user-friendly for DIY projects and works well over existing floors, however, the existing floor must be completely smooth, flat, and level.

           4. Peel-and-Stick LVP

This self-adhesive type is the easiest to install, requiring minimal tools. It’s ideal for smaller spaces or temporary flooring solutions, though it may not last as long as other types in high-traffic or moisture-prone areas.

           5. Luxury Vinyl Tile (LVT)

LVT is similar to LVP but typically comes in tile formats that mimic stone, ceramic, or porcelain, providing a tile-like feel. LVT can be installed with grout or as a floating floor.

Each type of LVP has unique features, so the choice often depends on your needs, style preferences, and installation skills.

At our showroom, we carry Click-Lock LVP, Glue Down LVP, LVT, and Rigid Core LVP, and our installers are trained to install any product that we carry.

           Types and Uses of Tile

When it comes to home design, tiles are incredibly versatile. They enhance aesthetics, protect surfaces, and lend a unique style to any room. With so many options available, choosing the right type of tile can be overwhelming. Here’s a guide to the most popular types of tiles, their characteristics, and where each one works best.

           1. Ceramic Tile

Ceramic tile is one of the most common and budget-friendly options. It’s made from natural clay and fired in a kiln, making it durable and easy to clean. Ceramic tiles come in a variety of colors, patterns, and finishes.

Best For: Kitchens, bathrooms, and other moderate-traffic areas. Glazed ceramic tiles resist moisture and are perfect for walls and backsplashes. However, they're less suitable for outdoor use because they’re more porous and less resistant to extreme temperatures.

           2. Porcelain Tile

Porcelain tile is a denser, more durable variety of ceramic tile, made with finer clay and fired at higher temperatures. Its strength and water resistance make it ideal for areas with heavy foot traffic.

Best For: Bathrooms, kitchens, and outdoor areas. Because of its low water absorption rate, porcelain is also a top choice for areas exposed to moisture, such as shower walls and floors.

           3. Glass Tile

Glass tiles bring an elegant, modern touch and are often used for accent walls, backsplashes, and decorative features. They reflect light beautifully and are available in a wide range of colors and finishes.

Best For: Kitchens and bathrooms. Glass tile is a stunning choice for backsplashes, though it can be slippery if used on floors, so it’s best to avoid it in high-traffic areas.

           4. Mosaic Tile

Mosaic tiles are small tiles, usually under 2 inches, and come in various materials like glass, ceramic, or natural stone. They are often sold in pre-arranged sheets, making installation easier and allowing for intricate designs.

Best For: Shower floors, backsplashes, and accent walls. Mosaic tiles are versatile and can bring a unique flair to any room, especially in small spaces where they can serve as an eye-catching feature.

           5. Natural Stone Tile

Natural stone tiles (e.g., marble, granite, travertine, limestone, and slate) add a touch of luxury and elegance. Each piece has a unique appearance due to natural variations, which can add warmth and texture to a space.

Best For: Bathrooms, kitchens, and living areas. These tiles require more maintenance, as stone is naturally porous and may need sealing to prevent staining and moisture absorption.

           6. Cement Tile

Cement tiles are durable and have a handcrafted, artisanal feel. They come in various patterns and are often used to make bold statements. Unlike ceramic and porcelain, cement tiles are not fired but instead cured, giving them a matte finish.

Best For: High-traffic areas like entryways, patios, and kitchen floors. Cement tiles are versatile and sturdy but require sealing to protect against staining and moisture.

           7. Marble Tile

Marble tile is synonymous with luxury and sophistication, offering a unique veining pattern and a smooth, polished finish. It’s perfect for adding a high-end look to any room, though it requires more upkeep than other materials.

Best For: Bathrooms, entryways, and decorative accent walls. Marble is best used in areas that don’t experience heavy wear and tear, as it can be prone to scratching and etching from acidic substances.

           8. Granite Tile

Granite is an incredibly durable natural stone, and it’s highly resistant to scratches, making it a great option for countertops and floors. Its speckled appearance works well in a variety of design styles.

Best For: Kitchens, bathrooms, and high-traffic areas. Granite’s strength makes it an excellent choice for areas that see daily use.

           9. Quarry Tile

Quarry tiles are unglazed ceramic tiles, typically in earthy red tones. They’re slip-resistant, making them suitable for both indoor and outdoor use. Quarry tile is extremely durable and easy to maintain.

Best For: Kitchens, outdoor patios, and entryways. Quarry tiles are especially popular in Mediterranean and rustic designs, where their natural colors enhance the aesthetic.

           10. Metal Tile

Metal tiles offer a sleek, modern look and are usually made from stainless steel, aluminum, or copper. They’re often used as accents or backsplash tiles and add an industrial edge to the space.

Best For: Kitchens, especially as backsplash tiles. Metal tiles are also used as accents in modern bathrooms or in home bars.

Choosing the Right Tile for Your Space and Project

Consider factors such as durability, maintenance, and style when selecting the right tile for each room. If you need a surface that withstands heavy use, opt for porcelain, ceramic, or stone. For accents, glass or metal tiles make a stylish statement. Each tile type brings unique qualities, so take time to consider the right match for your needs and aesthetic vision.

Ways to Install Wood Flooring

How should your wood flooring be installed?

Wood flooring can be installed in a variety of ways: glued down, nailed down, or floating/locking. One of the main determining factors for how a floor can be installed is the subfloor. If the subfloor is concrete, then the floor can be glued down or floated. If the subfloor is wood, then it can be glued down, nailed down, or floated-the determining factor is the type and thickness of the material.

Only engineered hardwood with a locking system can be installed as a floating floor, as it utilizes a locking system to keep it in place. It is important to note that not all engineered flooring can be installed this way, it needs to explicitly state that it has a locking mechanism. The product description or specifications will state if it has a locking mechanism or not and how they recommend installing it. This type of installation will need underlayment and if the subfloor is concrete, then it will also need a moisture barrier. We like to use 6 mm poly for the moisture barrier, which can be picked up at many stores such as Lowe’s, Home Depot, Floor & Décor, etc.

Wood flooring can also be installed as a nail down floor too, it does require underlayment and the subfloor needs to be plywood, as particle board will not take the nails properly. The wood also needs to be a solid hardwood or engineered flooring that is a ½ inch or thicker and the planks need to be less than 5 inches wide. If the planks are wider then 5 inches, then it will need to be nailed down with glue assistance. If the planks are less the ½ inch in thickness, it will need to be glued down because the engineered wood has a difficult time taking the nails without breaking.

Any wood flooring can be glued down to a wood subfloor or concrete subfloor. If it is glued down on a concrete subfloor, the adhesive used must include a moisture barrier to protect the flooring from the concrete. To maintain the warranty for the flooring, the specifications usually request specific types of trowels to be used or specific brands of adhesive. Prior to its installation, we recommend checking the product specifications.

Anyway that the wood flooring needs to be installed, A1 can install it and help you navigate the type of installation that will be best for your project and give you a long lasting floor.

A subfloor is the material under the finished flooring that provides stability and structural support for the final floor covering that is installed over it, such as hardwood, vinyl, or carpet. It provides a smooth, stable, and even surface to support the new flooring, furniture, and foot traffic. The most common types of subfloors are plywood, particle board, and cement. If the subfloor is particle board, it is recommended that it is removed and replaced with plywood as it isn’t rigid or strong. Particle board also likes to disintegrate with water and hold onto moisture, which will cause other issues like mold, decay, buckling of the floor, and decrease the structural integrity of the flooring and subfloor. We recommend replacing particle board with plywood (which A1 Flooring can assist with) as it is strong, rigid, and water-resistant and it is great for any kind of flooring installation: floating floor, nail down, or glue down. Plywood can also have additional treatments, like pressure treated wood, that can be excellent for other projects outside of it use to repair and replace subfloors. Cement is the other common subfloor that we see, which is typically seen when a house or structure is built on a concrete slab. Concrete is great as its very stable and durable, however, flooring can only be installed as a glue down or floating floor on it. It is also important to note that concrete needs to be sealed properly and/or have a moisture barrier installed under the flooring too. For glue down flooring, the moisture barrier is commonly included in the adhesive. For floating floors, the moisture barrier can be rolled on to the cement or can be an additional layer of underlayment or attached to the underlayment. We recommend taking care of and maintaining your subfloor to prevent any issues with the final floor covering, such as squeaking, uneven surfaces, and buckling. No matter what kind of subfloor you have, we can help you take care of it and find a floor and installation type that best fits for your needs and plan for your space.

Engineered Wood vs. Solid Wood Flooring

On the surface, engineered wood flooring and solid wood flooring look the same. However, they both have pros and cons and some overlapping similarities that are important to be aware of before deciding which product to have installed in your house. Engineered wood is composed of layers of wood and typically has a plywood core, which makes this a little bit cheaper. This core enables it to have more moisture resistance than solid flooring, however, it can still delaminate if it is exposed to water for a long period. Typically, the top layer comes prefinished, which means that it has already been sanded and stained and does not require additional work before post-installation

layer, also known as the veneer or surface layer. Solid wood is typically made from red oak, white oak, or pine. Solid wood is one solid piece of wood, with no layers, which makes it a little more expensive than engineered wood, and it can come prefinished or unfinished. In its unfinished state, it needs to be sanded and stained on site after it has been installed, which not all installers can do. Solid wood also has the capability of being refinished a few more times than engineered wood, which can only be refinished once or twice. This difference can also affect the floors’ lifespan, which is estimated to be 20-30 years for engineered wood floors and 30-100 years for solid wood floors. Both types of wood flooring do require time to acclimate to the temperature and humidity of the install site. If it does not get the necessary time to acclimate, it will expand and contract and cause the floor to warp and buckle. While both products can nailed down or glued down, only engineered wood can be installed as a floating floor as it typically has a locking system while solid wood typically has a tongue and grove instead. Both engineered and solid wood are excellent options for flooring installation and it's up to the consumer to decide which option they prefer or will fit best for their project.
